Owner's Guide

Nu Code product care and maintenance.

Nu Code products are built to last, and a little routine care keeps them looking good and operating smoothly. Wash the finishes, keep tracks and moving parts clean, lubricate with a dry silicone product, operate everything a couple of times a year, and check fasteners and fabric while you do. The sections below cover each product family we install.

Exterior shutters

Colonial, board and batten, Bahama, accordion, and roll-up shutters are built from aluminum and powder-coated finishes that need very little upkeep. Wash them with mild soap and water a few times a year, and more often if you live near salt water, then rinse thoroughly with fresh water. Keep accordion tracks and roll-up guides free of sand and debris, and apply a dry silicone lubricant to tracks, hinges, wheels, and locks so the panels glide and latch easily.

Roll-down and motorized screens

Rinse the screen fabric with fresh water and clean it with mild soap and a soft cloth. Wipe the bottom bar and side tracks so the fabric tracks straight, and never force a screen that stops mid-travel. Cycle each motorized screen fully open and fully closed at least twice a year, replace remote batteries as needed, and confirm the manual override works on any unit that has one.

Awnings

Aluminum standing seam awnings need an occasional wash and a check that fasteners and support brackets remain tight. Retractable fabric awnings should be brushed clean while dry, washed with mild soap and water, and allowed to dry completely before retracting. Retract fabric awnings during high wind, and clear the arms and roller of leaves and nests.

Storm panels, braces, and removable screens

Rinse panels, buckle and strap screens, removable fabric hurricane panels, and garage door braces after each deployment, dry them fully, and store them flat and off the ground in a dry space. Keep hardware, bolts, and wing nuts labeled together in a sealed container, and inspect permanent studs and tracks for corrosion once a year.

Interior shutters, shades, and blinds

Dust interior shutters, shades, and blinds regularly with a soft cloth, feather duster, or vacuum brush attachment. Spot clean with a lightly damp cloth and mild soap, and avoid soaking wood shutters or using harsh solvents on any finish. Check that cords, wands, and motorized controls operate smoothly, and recharge or replace batteries on motorized shades on the manufacturer's schedule.

When to call us

Call or text if a panel binds, a motor hesitates or stops, a fastener works loose, fabric or mesh shows damage, or a lock no longer engages fully. We service the products we install and can often correct a small issue before it becomes a repair.

Need service or a new product?

Every Nu Code product is measured and installed by our own factory-trained employees, so the same team that installed your products can service them. Send photos and approximate measurements for a preliminary estimate, or ask for an on-site consultation.

Questions we hear most

How long does it take to install shutters?

Most residential installations are completed in one day, although larger or more complex projects may take longer. Manufacturing lead times typically run 6 to 12 weeks depending on the product, seasonal demand, and material availability. If a manufacturer experiences production delays, lead times may extend. Rather than making promises we can't keep, we believe in being transparent and will give you the most accurate update available when you ask.

Can I install shutters on a rental property?

Yes. A rental property owner can install exterior shutters and qualify for the same insurance wind-mitigation discount as an owner-occupied home. Tenants typically cannot install permanent shutters without the owner's written approval because installation attaches anchors to the structure. Nu Code Shutters works directly with landlords and property managers across Southeast Louisiana.
